White Eagle Memorial Preserve

Ekone’s natural burial ground, White Eagle Memorial Preserve (WEMP) was founded in 2008, licensed by the State of Washington, and certified as a Conservation Burial Ground by the Green Burial Council.

It is one of only a few wilderness cemeteries in the country...offering 20 beautiful acres set within 1,200 acres of permanently protected oak and ponderosa forest, meadow and steppe on the edge of spectacular Rock Creek Canyon near the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

White Eagle stewards work with funeral homes, death care support professionals, and families independently, to provide meaningful natural burial experiences.  In the spirit of Ekone Ranch founder Ray Mitchell, whose grave lies at a cornerstone of the cemetery, and with respect and connection to the land, families are encouraged and supported to engage directly with the work and process of burying their loved ones.  Casual reception space is available outside at a picnic space near the White Eagle parking area.

White Eagle hosts annual Memorial Day (Sunday May 26th) and Remembrance Day (Sunday November 3rd) events, and occasional grave digging work parties in the spring and fall. Please visit the Events page for more information and to RSVP.
